What Really Happened Aboard Air France 447?

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/aviation/crashes/what-really-happened-aboard-air-france-447-6611877

This is a really great article about pitch and power and their mismanagement, about CRM - Crew Resource Management - and the lack thereof, and also about a possible design flaw by one of the two largest aircraft manufactures in the world.  I was truly amazed after I read this article.

Read the comments section also.  One in particular about flight deck procedures which clarifies who should have been in charge.

This article demonstrates a series of incidents and causal factors which led to the final outcome.  As we all have heard and possibly know, it is not just one thing that leads to a disaster like this.

What do you think?

  1. Thanks for directing me to this article! As a non-pilot, I have to wonder - once both pitot tubes were operational and the avionics once again reliable, why doesn't the computer automatically take things out of alternate mode and go back to normal mode? Wouldn't it be preferential to default back to autopilot and normal mode? Hope my question makes sense...

  2. Yes, good question…but why design an airplane with controls that move independently? To me, that is the real question. Hand flying is fine, as long as the non flying pilot can feel/see what inputs the flying pilot is making. But Robert couldn’t and neither could the captain. There is no excuse for Bonin to have done what he did. The only inference was that he was under psychological stress and did not have the ability to deal with his fear of the situation.
